'It was surreal': Dash cam captures car speeding through Cary shopping center, crashing into several cars
A driver hit the gas instead of the brakes on Friday, speeding through a Cary shopping center and accidentally hitting several cars.
Mike Hiller's dash cam captured the shocking video before 1:30 p.m. in the Wellington Park Shopping Center at the corner of SE Cary Parkway and Tryon Road, which is anchored by a Lowes Foods.
"It was surreal," he said. "You can see me walking in front of my own parked car that has a dash cam."
Hiller said he heard the car bouncing over curbs and hitting cars.
"I've had that dash cam on the car over a year and this is the first interesting thing I have caught," he said.
In front of New York Pizza, a white sedan had been pushed into a silver van.
WRAL News spoke with a woman who did not want to be named. Her car was hit while she was having lunch.
"A friend and I were eating at the pub and someone came in looking for owners of cars," she said. "Sure enough, mine was one of them. We came out to find a five-car collision ... now I'm waiting on tow trucks to come and move cars."
According to police, the driver was startled when she saw a vehicle backing out of their parking spot. She hit the gas instead of the brakes and cut the steering wheel too sharply, causing her to crash into several other vehicles.
There were no signs of impairment, and it was just an accident, police said.
The driver was transported to a local hospital out of caution but will be okay.
Five cars were impacted, police said. No one else was injured.
